Video: Protester “Chipmunks” Shut Down Utah Tar Sands Mine

Book Cliffs, Utah – A handful of protesters moving quickly in front of construction vehicles stopped work again at the first tar sands mine in the US on Sept. 23. Authorities arrested and jailed five, but the campaign to terminate the mine said the resistance will not relent until all tar sands plans stop. The US Oil Sands construction straddles 213 acres in Utah’s Book Cliffs.

One Utah Tar Sands Resistance protester said,

“Direct, physical intervention is necessary to halt this toxic project. If just five percent of those at the People’s Climate March in New York City came to Utah, we could shut down tar sands construction for good – and probably get away with it.”
