Video: Protester “Chipmunks” Shut Down Utah Tar Sands Mine
Book Cliffs, Utah – A handful of protesters moving quickly in front of construction vehicles stopped work again at the first tar sands mine in the US on Sept. 23. Authorities arrested and jailed five, but the campaign to terminate the mine said the resistance will not relent until all tar sands plans stop. The US Oil Sands construction straddles 213 acres in Utah’s Book Cliffs.
One Utah Tar Sands Resistance protester said,
“Direct, physical intervention is necessary to halt this toxic project. If just five percent of those at the People’s Climate March in New York City came to Utah, we could shut down tar sands construction for good – and probably get away with it.”

Utah tar sands development threatens 40 million people’s drinking water safety and would cause irreparable land damage, including clear-cutting of old-growth juniper, fir and pine forest.
Construction began in 2014 with commercial sales anticipated in 2015. Hundreds disrupted construction work this year, vowing to halt the mine. Including the new five defendants, 27 from Utah and the Americas face protest actions criminal charges.
Mine construction ends this month due to oncoming winter conditions. Protesters vow to a spring return.
