Jimmy Carter Advocates Rejection of Keystone XL

Joining a group of nine other Nobel laureates, former President Jimmy Carter urged President Obama to reject the Keystone XL pipeline proposal.

The letter addressed to both Obama and Secretary of State John Kerry reads, “As you deliberate the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline, you are poised to make a decision that will signal either a dangerous commitment to the status quo, or bold leadership that will inspire millions counting on you to do the right thing for our shared climate.”

Carter is the first former U.S. President to express opposition to the Keystone XL. Environmental activism groups, including 350.org, have expressed strong opposition to the building of the pipeline proposed to transport tar sands from Canada.

Secretary of State John Kerry indicated that the project does serve the public interest. However, environmental activists feel that the tar sands pipeline poses a serious risk to increasing climate change the potential for catastrophic spills. Over 2,000,000 people submitted comments to the State Department as a part of the national interest determination process.

Obama is expected to make a decision on the the Keystone XL project later this year.
